Quick Quiz

Test Your Skill

5 quick questions to see where you stand. No pressure — just a fun way to discover your starting point.

Finding out where you actually stand

Most people arriving in Hong Kong have picked up more Chinese than they give themselves credit for, and rather less than a textbook chapter number suggests. This quiz is a quick, honest check on both counts. It takes about five minutes, needs no sign-up, and covers Mandarin or Cantonese depending on which you choose at the start.

How the quiz works

  1. Choose Mandarin or Cantonese — the two are assessed separately, since knowing one tells you very little about the other.
  2. Answer the questions as they come, without looking anything up.
  3. Skip anything you genuinely do not know rather than guessing, so the result reflects what you can actually use.
  4. Read your result and the suggested starting point at the end.

What it tells you

  • Roughly where you sit against beginner, intermediate and upper-intermediate benchmarks.
  • Whether your recognition of characters is ahead of or behind your listening.
  • Which areas are worth prioritising first, rather than restarting from lesson one.
  • Whether your existing Mandarin gives you any real head start in Cantonese, or the reverse.

Self-assessment is unreliable in both directions. Learners who studied formally often underrate themselves because they compare against a syllabus rather than against conversation; those who picked the language up by ear often overrate their reading. A short structured check tends to be more useful than either instinct, and it makes the first lesson considerably more productive when you already know which gaps matter.
